Are You “Too Fat”?

Do you think you are too fat?

Really?

Too fat for what?

People of all sizes are happy. People of all sizes are depressed. People of all sizes feel good about their bodies. People of all sizes feel bad about their bodies.

You are not too fat to love or be loved. You are not too fat to have a career you like. You are not too fat to sing. You are not too fat to be a parent.

You can be healthy at any size. You can exercise at any size. You can be a vegetarian at any size. You can respect yourself at any size.

The size of your body does not indicate a lack of willpower. The size of your body is not proof of your inadequacy. The size of your body does not make it OK for people to be cruel to you. The size of your body does not give other people permission to give you advice.

If you didn’t spend so much energy feeling bad about your appearance, what else could you do? If you didn’t try to restrict your eating so you could lose weight, what could your relationship to food be like? If you didn’t “feel fat” all the time, what else might you feel?

Is there discrimination against fat people? Yes. Is there a constant barrage of anti-fat messages from the media and from medical care providers? Yes. Is it hard for fat people to find clothes they like, comfortable furniture, a seat on the subway? Yes. Is any of this your fault? NO.

Let go of the self-hatred. Love yourself today just as you are. Appreciate your body for what it can do. Eat well, move around because it’s fun, be the person you think you could be if you only lost weight.

You are not too fat. But you can waste a lot of your life thinking you are.
